Welcome to Essex Knee Surgery

Welcome to the essexkneesurgery website. It is authored by Mr Chris Rees, a Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon. Mr Rees has a busy NHS practice at Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford and undertakes private work at Springfield Hospital in Chelmsford. Mr Rees has developed subspecialty skills in all forms of knee surgery in both young and old patients particularly in the management of sporting and traumatic knee injuries. In addition he performs general lower limb surgery including hip replacement surgery. Mr Rees has recently been the Clinical Director for Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery at Broomfield Hospital.

This website is intended to offer clear and concise information to patients or relatives who wish to find out more regarding a knee or hip problem. Within this website there are details about Mr Rees’ background (profile), focussed information outlining basic anatomy and conditions that can affect the knee and hip (patient info), the types of operations undertaken (surgery) and various anaesthetic options (anaesthesia). There is also information about the hospitals where Mr Rees works (hospitals), ways to get in touch (contact us) and finally a page listing other websites to access for wider discussion (links).

Mr Rees works closely with Dr Ravindran Nair during both his NHS and private work. Dr Ravindran is an experienced Consultant Anaesthetist with specialist skills in orthopaedic and regional anaesthesia. Mr Rees also works directly with highly skilled Physiotherapists (please see links) with access to state-of-the-art rehabilitation facilities and Radiographers with access to high quality MRI and CT scanners. Together they offer a superlative surgical service based on a comprehensive team approach. They pride themselves on their communication skills and are committed to providing clinical excellence. At all times priority lies with maintaining patient dignity, privacy, choice and above all patient safety.

Mr Rees only uses surgical knee and hip implants that have been clinically tested and have proven long term survival. However technology is constantly advancing in terms of both surgical technique and new materials. Mr Rees is therefore very happy to discuss new treatment options for patients of all ages including oxinium knee replacement, computer assisted and minimally invasive surgery and cartilage transplantation. It is imperative that appropriate clinical and surgical decisions are made on an individual basis with the full understanding of the patient. Close attention is paid to explaining the various options in terms of operative procedure and type of prosthesis. Techniques for knee and hip replacement surgery and day case arthroscopic ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) reconstruction are all based on the ‘Best Practice’ guidelines published by the British Orthopaedic Association.

All of the intra-operative photographs and x-rays shown throughout this website depict Mr Rees’ own work and illustrate his own genuine patients undergoing surgery.
